The Peking, a large steel Square-rigger shoulders her way through heavy seas. Men are busy shortening sails to prevent damage from the increasing storm. These vessels were not as graceful in lines as the wooden clipper ships, which preceeded them, but they were twice as large to try and compete with the more efficient steamships. These windjammers were awesome in every dimension, at least 300 feet long, with mast 180 feet above the decks and carring acres of canvas. The largest of these sails weighed over a ton when dry and far more when wet. These giant sailing ships could carry immense amounts of cargo and valiantly challenged the coming of steam. But their time was brief - from the end of the 19th century to the first third of the 20th. The sea poet John Masefield wrote...They mark our passage as a race of men...Earth will not see such ships as those again.
