Pemaquid Point Lighthouse
The Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was commissioned in 1827 by President John Quincy Adams.
The original light had an Argand-Lewis parabolic reflector that was lit with candles, giving a visibility of 2 miles.
Augustin Fresnel invented a superior way of focusing light in the early 1850s. and most lighthouses in the US were eventually converted, with Pemaquid Point receiving a fourth order Fresnel in 1856. The lens is one of only six Fresnel lenses still in service in Maine.
The keeper's house was built in 1857.
The bellhouse originally contained a bell and a weight-driven mechanism to ring it. The small tower contained the weight, which would be pulled up in fog conditions to allow a striker to operate continuosly, much like a grand father clock works.
Pemaquid Point Lighthouse was chosen by popular vote to be the image shown on the Maine state quarter dollar US coin.
Steeped in history, Pemaquid Point light is among the most recognized lighthouses in Maine, and additioanly, one of the most beautiful. The structures themselves and the surrounding coastal landscape, with almost constantly crashing waves, captured Jim Gray's eye from the first glimpse. This giclee image has been created from Jim's original oil on canvas, and it is available in several sizes, on canvas or on archival paper.
