Destroyer, USS Hood

With a "bone in her teeth" the Destroyer USS Hood steams toward the Gulf on her World War II shakedown. Between 1942 and 1945, Mobile shipyards launched 38 Naval vessels (six destroyers, 32 destroyer escorts and minesweepers) and about 160 tankers and cargo ships. USS Hood, a fighting vessel, was headed for the Pacific Theatre of Operations. On her were about 200 young Americans, trained to keep her engines turning and her guns shooting. Of her crew, at least 100 had never seen salt water before. Perhaps the same ratio holds for 12,000 men that manned the other vessels built in Mobile during the war. It was that kind of war.
